During the last century, the craft of stone masonry and construction with lime mortar became virtually extinct in the West of Ireland. However, thanks to the efforts of the Directors of Galway Stone Design, Eamon O’Donoghue and Michael Herwood, Galway now has, once again, a cadre of artisans highly skilled in both these crafts, as well as the construction of medieval open timber work. “Two years ago these days we reopened, re-blessed and re-entered our precious Church Building in Newbridge, County Galway.
The building was in very bad shape. When we walked inside we were met with the revolting odour of wet, damp. It is a historical building. One section was constructed in the 1830s....built by the local landlord intended to be used as a market house. When we stripped off the plaster we found a treasure.....beautiful stonework. We immediately went about researching a stone mason to restore, preserve and enhance our stonework.
We were so fortunate and blessed to find Mike Herwood and his team. We met him and asked to come visit our Church. When he saw the walls he fell in love with the project. I truly forget what financial arrangements we made with Mike. I do remember money was never was never an issue for him or for us (Don’t get me wrong we are not rich and Mike was not free!!!). Mike is not just a master stone mason; he is an artist. We are very grateful to him and his team. We are very proud of our Church....it is beautiful. We are indebted to many people....especially to Mike Herwood.
Without reservation or hesitation I recommend Mike for any special stone project.
